Located North of Steeles in Toronto's GTA, the City of Markham is a municipality of over 310,000 residents. Through its many festivals and special events, the city of Markham has proven its dedication to sustainability and local achievement. Farmer's markets are commonplace and Markham restaurants are encouraged to purchase locally. There are a number of places to eat within the area that caters to everyone, whether you are looking for a family-friendly establishment or a restaurant for date-night.

Until the 1970s, the region was mostly farmland and marsh. The opening of Highway 404 allowed for the expansion of the small township, and allowed for a rapid growth in industrialization. Now, some of the biggest multinational corporations have their Canadian headquarters in Markham.


Markham is the fourth largest city in the Greater Toronto Area. But, despite being an industrialized and interconnected city, Markham remains rooted in its agricultural heritage. A dozen farms are spread across the region, providing fruits and vegetables to local vendors. Markham was the first municipality in Canada to adopt the Local Food Plus, which certifies farms and processors for environmentally sustainable practices. The organization also links these businesses to local buyers.

A lot of these buyers are also vendors at one of the city's two farmer's markets. The Main Street Markham Farmer's Market begins in early May and runs until October, every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The goal of the market is to capture "the good old fashioned traditions of the past" through live music and a quaint atmosphere. Vendors include organic and local produce from Whittamore's, Reesor, and Forsythe farms.

The second farmers market is located at the Stiver Mill on Main Street Unionville. The market was originally founded to bring tourists to the historic Stiver Mill, which was built in 1916. It is currently undergoing a full restoration by the city. The market has become a family favourite, with lots of vendors and places to eat like the Farmers' Market Grill. It operates every Sunday from June until October.

In addition, the City of Markham is participating in Seeds for Change, a grass-root organization advocating for healthier and sustainable neighbourhoods. They are challenging residents to grow 2,015 new food gardens before 2015, when Markham hosts the Pan Am Games.
