The Best Restaurants in North York, Ontario

As one of the most diverse regions in Toronto, North York has grown from a small suburbanite municipality to a conglomeration of communities. Home to York University, Seneca College, and Osgoode Hall Law School, the neighbourhood has become a go-to place for students and young families who may not be able to afford a condominium downtown. North York restaurants play to every demographic and are able to satisfy the cultural and ethnic diversity in the region.

South of Steeles, Yonge St. has become a cultural hub with places to eat that specifically cater to to Asian, Italian, Mexican, and Indian cuisines. All of these restaurants are able to co-exist without too much competition. Yonge St. connects North York to downtown Toronto, and is one of the most popular strips for food and entertainment.


A small plaza located at the intersection of Finch Ave. and Leslie St. specializes in Chinese and Asian cuisine. It was first established in the 1980s to serve the increasingly large Chinese community in the area. In addition to its one-of-a-kind teashop called 31 Kitchen, the plaza has a bakery that sells traditional Chinese pastries, a Halal eatery, the multicultural grocery store Sunny Supermarket, and a Congee restaurant.

There are two large shopping centres in North York-Yorkville Shopping Centre and Fairview Mall. Outside of the food courts, both centres have eat-in restaurants like Moxies, Milestones, or Pickle Barrel.

During the summer, Fairview Mall by Don Mills and Sheppard hosts a farmers market in its south parking lot. The market runs from June until mid-October every Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. While modest, the market encourages vendors to bring their product to an area in the GTA where local produce is not readily available. Examples of vendors include Blyleven Farms, which sells family grown fruits and vegetables; European Meats, a Cookstown-based family butchery; Green Vision Farms, an organic farm that specializes in squashes and kale; and Hearty Catering, which sells organic and vegan treats.
